Overview
Stanford University, officially Leland Stanford Junior University, was founded on November 11, 1885, by Leland Stanford and Jane Lathrop Stanford in memory of their son, Leland Stanford Jr. Opening its doors on October 1, 1891, the coeducational, non-denominational institution was modeled after Cornell University and initially offered free tuition. The Founding Grant of 1885 declared the mission to be qualifying students for personal success and direct usefulness in life, as well as promoting equal opportunities for both sexes and incorporating agricultural instruction.
