Overview
Nature is a British weekly multidisciplinary scientific journal, first published on November 4, 1869. Its founders were Norman Lockyer and Alexander MacMillan. Lockyer, a professor at Imperial College, named the journal after a line from William Wordsworth. MacMillan's publishing company provided financial backing, absorbing losses for approximately 30 years before the journal became profitable. Nature aims to present scientific results to the general public and advocate for science's role in education and daily life, as well as providing scientists with early information about advances across natural knowledge branches and opportunities to discuss scientific questions. Early contributors included members of the X Club, a group supporting Darwin's theory of evolution.
