William Paley

Historical Figure

William Paley (1743-1805) was an English clergyman and philosopher known for his articulation of Natural Theology, most notably his teleological "watchmaker analogy" presented in *Natural Theology* (1802). Educated at Christ's College, Cambridge, he later served as Rector of Musgrave and Archdeacon of Carlisle. He defended retrenchment of the Thirty-nine Articles and supported the American colonies during the Revolutionary War, hoping to end slavery.
