Varo Manufacturing Company privately printed 127 copies of Jessup's annotated book — the 'Varo Edition' — in 1957 at the commission of the Office of Naval Research, creating the key artifact around which institutional ambiguity in the legend centers.

Overview

Varo, Inc., based in Garland, Texas, operated from the 1940s until at least the 1980s. Initially focused on precision frequency power sources, the company pioneered microminiaturization in the 1950s and became a leading supplier of night vision equipment to the U.S. Army from the late 1960s onwards. Varo's contributions spanned defense R&D, space hardware, and advanced electronics. The company's main building burned down in 1956 but was rebuilt.
